Most of sculptures in the temple are painted sculpture, such as Dunhuang Mogao Cave in Gansu Province, Maiji Mountain, Shuanglin Temple in Sanxi Province and so on, all of them are painted sculpture. The clay figures are made of the combination of clay, sand and grass. It is very solid after drying. Now we made an improvement for pigment, we adopt propylene pigment which is not blowing out, fading, and dissolving into water compared with powder pigment. So the present painted sculpture can be kept for a longer time.

In recent years Clay Figure Zhang Workshop has made many painted sculpture for temples all over the country, such as Anguo Medicine Temple in Hebei Province, Huangliang dream of Hangdan, Mozhou Temple of Renqiu, Dragon King Temple of the Summer Place, Empress Palace of Tianjin and so on.
